The CMP (Consent Management Platform) is a consent pop-up that will show to your European traffic - GDPR prevalent countries, allowing readers to opt in or out of data collection in an easy-to-read, easy-to-use, customizable platform.

Here’s what your reader will see

If your reader Accepts, they'll be shown personalized ads, just as if they were in any other country. Personalized ads are relevant to the reader and are based on whatever data has been collected.

If your reader chooses to manage their settings, they are able to actively opt in and out of both consent and “legitimate interest”. They also have the ability to Reject All.

“Legitimate interest” means that the data was required to conduct business. Now users can opt out of when data is processed on this basis.

Manage Settings:

Should a reader choose to 'Reject All', they would not be served any ads. If a reader who has opted out changes their mind and wants to opt in, they can change their preferences in the "Change Privacy Settings" link in the footer of the site.

Down the road we will have an option to include a "reminder" pop-up to the user, but that isn't available quite yet.

Preliminary testing on The Hollywood Gossip saw upwards of 95% consent rates, ensuring that your digital advertising revenue from users in the EU remains intact.

Each site will be unique, but we are very hopeful that this trend will continue across all of Mediavine's partner sites.

To turn on the Mediavine CMP, please visit your Mediavine Dashboard Settings area, and click on the "Privacy" tab.

Add Your Privacy Policy Link

Make sure you have your Privacy Policy updated, and that the link is in your settings.

Your CMP links to your privacy policy, so this is not optional! There are also several bidders that will not spend on your site without a Privacy Policy in place, so it can impact your revenue as well.

Once you are there, you'll see a few different options:

  • Use Mediavine CMP

This will activate the popup in the screenshots above. Your readers in the EU will have the choice to opt in or out of personalized ads.

  • Disable ads for EU Traffic

This option will show no ads to EU readers. If you have any readership in the European Union, you will see revenue decreases if you choose this option.

The consent will show once per EU visitor, and is good for up to 13 months, unless any of the following happens.

  • Mediavine's vendor list is updated

  • A user's cookies are cleared

If those items happen, the popup will display again to ask the reader for an updated consent.

We will be doing our best to limit vendor changes on our side, and recommend doing the same for custom consents

If you're curious and would like to run a test, we recommend using a VPN to simulate browsing from a country in Europe. If you're unsure about what a VPN is, don't worry! Just reach out to publishers@mediavine.com and one of our support specialists will be happy to run a test for you!

You can also append ?test=gdpr to the end of the url to force the modal to show.

Utilizing the Mediavine Consent Management Platform will ensure that the display and video advertising portion of your GDPR requirements are compliant with this new law, but this is likely NOT all you need to do to be fully compliant.

Please make sure that things like affiliate links, your email marketing services, sponsored campaign tracking pixels, giveaways, and ANYTHING on your site that collects data about your readers has been looked at and taken care of.

Please contact a lawyer for specific recommendations on becoming fully GDPR-compliant. Each site and situation is unique, and we cannot give legal advice.
