# What Is the Mediavine Reporting API?

## The Mediavine Reporting API makes it easier to access your Mediavine reporting data without having to manually log in to your dashboard, export reports, and copy numbers from one place to another.

If you’ve ever wished your Mediavine revenue and performance data could show up automatically in the tools you already use, like a spreadsheet, a reporting dashboard, or a system your developer builds, the Reporting API makes that possible.

**What is an API?**

API stands for Application Programming Interface. While that sounds technical, the concept is fairly simple: an API allows two different software systems to securely communicate with each other and exchange information.

Think of it like a messenger between systems.

Your Mediavine dashboard displays your reporting data for you to view. The Reporting API allows another approved tool or application to request that same reporting data automatically.

For example, instead of:

1\. Logging into your Mediavine dashboard

2\. Finding your revenue report

3\. Exporting the data

4\. Copying it into a spreadsheet or reporting tool

…the API can allow that information to flow directly into the tool you’re using.

**What can you use the Reporting API for?**

Most publishers who use the API want one of these things:

- **Less manual work.** A spreadsheet or dashboard that updates itself every morning, instead of exporting reports by hand.
- **Everything in one place.** Mediavine revenue next to your other income, traffic tools, or business data, without copying it over.
- **Connecting a tool that asks for it.** Some content and analytics tools can show your Mediavine revenue for each post once you give them an API key. If a tool you use has asked for your “Mediavine API key” or “access token,” this is what it means.
- **Totals across multiple sites.** If you run several sites, a developer can roll them up into one view.

**Is it right for you?**

The API is probably worth setting up if:

- You have a developer, VA, or tech partner who works with your data
- A tool or service you use has asked for your Mediavine API key
- You regularly copy Mediavine numbers into spreadsheets or other reports

You probably don’t need it if you check your dashboard and that gives you everything you want. That’s completely fine! The API shows the same data your dashboard does.

**Do I need to know how to code?**

To build something with it yourself, yes. To use it, no. Most publishers create their key in a couple of minutes and give it to a developer or a tool that handles the rest. Your part is creating the key and keeping it safe.

**What data is included**

The API gives you the same kinds of reports you’ll find in your dashboard:

- Earnings, broken out by day
- Pages
- Ad units
- Countries
- Devices (desktop, mobile, tablet)
- Demand partners
- Traffic sources
- Videos

Each report shows one breakdown at a time, the same way your dashboard does. For example, revenue by country and revenue by device come back as two separate reports. Earnings is the only report broken out by day; the others give one total for the date range you ask for. History goes back as far as your dashboard does.

**How to create your access token**

In order to use the API you’ll need to create a personal access token, which some tools may refer to as a key.

1. Log in to your Mediavine dashboard and open your **User** **Profile** by clicking your profile image in the top right corner of the dashboard.
2. Go to **Personal Access Tokens** and choose **Create Token**.
3. Give it a name that tells you where it will be used, like “Revenue spreadsheet” or “\[Tool name\] connection.” The name is just a label for you.
4. Copy the token right away and store it somewhere safe.

**Copy your token before closing the window.** For security purposes, it is only shown once and cannot be shown again. If you lose it, just revoke it and create a new one. It only takes a few seconds.

You can have up to 10 active tokens at a time. If you reach the limit, revoke one you no longer use to make room.

**Keeping your token safe**

Treat your token like a password. Anyone who has it can see your revenue data.

- **It sees what you see.** A token can access exactly the sites the person who created it can see in the dashboard, and nothing more.
- **It doesn’t expire.** It keeps working until you turn it off.
- **You can turn it off anytime.** Revoke it from the same Personal Access Tokens page, and it stops working immediately.
- **Use one token per tool or person.** If you stop working with a developer or stop using a tool, you can revoke just that one without breaking anything else.
- **Check “last used.”** Your token list shows when each one was created and last used. If something looks unfamiliar, revoke it.

- **Don’t paste your token into emails, shared spreadsheets, or anywhere public**. When you share it with a developer, use a secure method like a password manager.

**Tips for reading your data**

A few details about timing and how certain numbers are calculated. Pass these along to anyone using your data to help them read numbers accurately.

- **Recent revenue** Yesterday’s revenue is final by about 1:00 PM Eastern time. Until then, it may still update.
- **Sessions and pageviews arrive about two days late.** They come from Google Analytics, so the most recent day or two may show zero. That doesn’t mean your traffic dropped.
- **All dates are in Eastern time,** which is how Mediavine accounts for revenue.
- **Adjustments can be negative.** Credits and deductions from your Payments page appear as one combined number, which can come out negative in a month with a deduction.
- **Sites running their own Google Ad Manager:** page-level and traffic source revenue doesn’t include AdX.

**FAQ**

**Will using the API change anything on my site?**No. It only reads reporting data. It can’t change your ads, settings, or payments.

**Is this different from my dashboard data?**No. It’s the same reporting data, delivered somewhere else.

**Can I combine breakdowns, like revenue by page and traffic source together?**Not today. Each report shows one breakdown at a time. We’re exploring more flexible reporting options and will share updates when they’re ready.

**Can someone on my team create a token?**Yes, if they have their own dashboard login. Their token will only see the sites they can see.

**I shared my token with someone I no longer work with. What do I do?**Revoke it from your Personal Access Tokens page. It stops working immediately.
