# Adjusting Your In-Content Ads

## Customizing In-Content Ads with Manual Controls or the Simplified Optimized Ad Experience Setting

### Looking to Simplify Your In-Content Ad Setup?

Before diving into Custom Controls, you may want to explore the **Optimized Ad Experience (OAE),** a new setting designed to simplify in-content ad logic, reduce clutter, and improve viewability and CPMs. OAE automatically adjusts your in-content ads for optimal performance and reader experience, without the need to manually tweak spacing or frequency settings. [Learn more about OAE here.](https://help.mediavine.com/migration/what-is-the-optimized-ad-experience?hsLang=en)

### Still Looking to Adjust Ad Controls Manually?

**In-Content Ad Settings** can still be found in your **Dashboard \> Settings \> In-Content Ads**, and Custom Control is always available if you prefer to manage your placement details.

### Before Adjusting, Understand How Your Ads are Placed

Mediavine In-Content Ads are placed using Coalition for Better Ads (CBA) standards.

[Mediavine is a member of the Coalition for Better Ads](https://www.betterads.org/members/), a group dedicated to improving the online advertising experience. Other members include Google, Facebook, and Microsoft.

[CBA standards dictate that in-content ads can never exceed 30% ads to 70% content](https://www.betterads.org/mobile-ad-density-higher-than-30/)based on the height of your content. The Mediavine script places your in-content ads based on these standards. **That means that even if you turn your in-content ad settings all the way up, you'll still be within CBA standards** -- standards that were created with user experience in mind.

### RECOMMENDED MOBILE SETTINGS

- 28-30% Mobile Ad Frequency
- 2 Paragraph Minimum Spacing
- Optimized for Content Length

### MOBILE AD FREQUENCY

[![](https://help.mediavine.com/hubfs/Knowledge%20Base%20Import/downloads.intercomcdn.comio206121834e784543eeb5bf5f7c8d45f1cMouse_Highlight_Overlay-1.png)](https://downloads.intercomcdn.com/i/o/206121834/e784543eeb5bf5f7c8d45f1c/Mouse_Highlight_Overlay.png?expires=1726000200&signature=88c000be6e98ab2d0a3aebad36e488e46d49dcd2e0c4a4f612109c7b464f5884&req=diAhF8t%2FlYJbFb4f3HP0gGEX7Epl%2Bls6q5yUMvjDwQ0ZmLbQrfXW2Luhp9ai%0AaWoDQl07LFjln0CprQ%3D%3D%0A)

Decreasing mobile frequency will reduce the number of in-content ad slots available to fill on mobile.***Increasing* mobile frequency will increase the number of in-content ad slots available. Increasing frequency will increase impressions which also increases revenue and RPM.**

Keep in mind that **because frequency is based on the height of your content, the number of ad slots will vary based on the length of your content on a per-post basis**.

- **[Learn How to Count Your Mediavine Ads HERE](https://help.mediavine.com/how-to-count-your-mediavine-ads?hsLang=en)**

### MOBILE MINIMUM SPACING

[![](https://help.mediavine.com/hubfs/Knowledge%20Base%20Import/downloads.intercomcdn.comio206122087147d7afb0d35676015f1dfa6Mouse_Highlight_Overlay-1.png)](https://downloads.intercomcdn.com/i/o/206122087/147d7afb0d35676015f1dfa6/Mouse_Highlight_Overlay.png?expires=1726000200&signature=33473173301a00c9a6712c8a8e19cfe1d2f5d837594be0f3093a62b377d570b8&req=diAhF8t8nYlYFb4f3HP0gGbnv6ZIDb93lDglg4LfV60NNt20qOOmRRBn3WFK%0AMQzMe9y1cQeGhBTlZg%3D%3D%0A)

A "paragraph" is not a traditional paragraph, but rather refers to how the Mediavine script wrapper reads the HTML of your content. Paragraphs in terms of where ads can be placed includes the following elements: \<p\>, \<H\>, \<image\>

Increasing ad spacing will decrease the number of ad slots available to fill, which will reduce impressions, effectively lowering revenue and RPM.***Decreasing* ad spacing will increase impressions, raising revenue and RPM.**

### MOBILE AD LIMIT

[![](https://help.mediavine.com/hubfs/Knowledge%20Base%20Import/downloads.intercomcdn.comio2061231818225e36cf038a8ec9bc7338dMouse_Highlight_Overlay-1.png)](https://downloads.intercomcdn.com/i/o/206123181/8225e36cf038a8ec9bc7338d/Mouse_Highlight_Overlay.png?expires=1726000200&signature=e3b993f0f88852174939e45177783541a4acd8bb94bc2cebc0ad01c8ad789c89&req=diAhF8t9nIleFb4f3HP0gItj6EIvGUKGobELaCW%2FjSZ1M%2BMuI5VddBGgV4TE%0Aq61SsZisEqiBcKOT6w%3D%3D%0A)

Setting an ad limit dictates the maximum number of in-content ad slots that can appear on long-form content.

Because the script wrapper intelligently places ads based on the chosen frequency, it's not necessary to set a limit. **Choosing Optimized for Content length means that ads will be placed based on your chosen frequency and paragraph spacing all the way to the end of the post.** Setting a limit means that long-form content may not be monetized until the end.

Optimized for Content length is the best option for revenue and RPM.

### **RECOMMENDED DESKTOP SETTINGS**

- 20-25% Desktop Ad Frequency
- 2 Paragraph Minimum Spacing
- Optimized for Content-Length

Desktop Ad Frequency, Desktop Ad Minimum Spacing, and Desktop Ad Limit settings all function in the same fashion as the mobile settings.
